Isac Philo Carter was born March 11, 1829 in Brookline, VT. At age 18 he volunteered for the Mormon Battalion. Carter also made 8 trips across the desert to Salt Lake City as a stage driver and a Pony Express rider. He came to San Bernardino in 1852. He married Matilda Lyman on October 6, 1856. Matilda was born November 14, 1836 in Kirtland, OH and moved to Salt Lake City in 1848 and then to San Bernardino in 1851. Carter is credited as the first person to discover gold in Lytle Creek, CA. Carter died on July 27, 1913 and Matilda died in 1903.
