Henry Goodcell, Sr. was born September 26, 1823 in Nonington Parish, Kent, England. At the age of 16 he was apprenticed to a sea captain. Goodcell sailed for six years. He married in 1847 in England and in 1853 he joined the Mormon church and moved to Utah. In 1857 they arrived in San Bernardino where he purchased land for a ranch and planted an orchard and a vineyard.
