Robert F. M. Mathis was born January 17, 1832 in Nashville, TN. He came to San Bernardino in 1854 and married Sarah Ann McCrary on December 24, 1855. Sarah was born in November 14, 1848 in Union Co., IL. Mathis was a freighter and rancher, had lived in El Monte and eventually moved to the Cajon Pass area. Mathis died February 18, 1900 in Cajon Pass. Sarah died August 23, 1930 in San Bernardino. They are both buried at the San Bernardino Pioneer Cemetery.
